it's pretty easy to look at it that way from a logical perspective. not a single positive thing comes from smoking. you mentioned a pretty solid list of negatives there, yet people do it anyway. my dad is a hardcore purist. want to hear our father~son sex talk? "son," he says, "let me tell you something about life. smoking a filtered cigarette is like sucking on a tit that has a bra on." no lie. he's a crazy guy.

he practically lights one non filtered cigarette off of one he's finishing. he's lost a brother to lung cancer, a father in law to cancer who also suffered two strokes and a removal of a voice box, a father to brain cancer, among assorted friends. it was that very thing i wanted to avoid. there isn't a touch of logic there, so it makes perfect sense to quit; however, every single person that i know that has ever quit has described the process of quitting as pure hell. like most addictions, there doesn't seem to be room for logic. it takes huge guts and incredible strength as i mentioned. it was pretty easy for me, which leads me to believe i wasn't hooked inspite of a semi-steady habit. of course, i'm a stubborn bastard too, so i usually don't have much trouble seeing things through once i decide for myself it's what i want. case in point, i've been a vegetarian since i was around 14.

i'm currently reading mere christianity by cs lewis. he made a great point that has a direct connection to what you are currently going through. he says that a person struggling with temptation is never quite sure how much strength is needed to overcome if he gives up. in other words, a person who always gives in to temptation doesn't really know much at all about his situation if he's never made an effort not to give in. if he quits two days after starting something, he doesn't know what that third day would have been like.

if nothing else, it's a pretty awesome gift you are trying to give yourself and your family. we've heard plenty of stories from you about your son, lawshark has shown incredible love and patience for his son and family with recent struggles (best wishes to you on that front, buddy), and suzi frequently talks of her children and it's clear with every story what kind of love is there. lucky kids. they have some very wonderful and colorful role models and your current steps are simply one more feather for the hat. it's important to live our lives in a way that it's a model for others. *a round of applause for you parents.

take care of yourselves,

chamberlain
