i think the names of some of the places around here is pretty telling. besides names like buckskin, we have towns called hicksville, ney, and farmer. pretty accurate, if nothing else. there are a lot of farms, farms, and more farms. it's also incredibly flat due to glaciers and a lot of the areas are naturally swampy. there isn't much dirt. everything is this incredibly hard clay.

i actually live in paulding county. it's pretty poor compared to most surrounding areas. it's the butt of a lot of jokes from people in the surrounding areas. i think most of the jokes are pretty accurate, however. people are different around here.

defiance is a mid-size town. it's the location of an old fort (fort defiance) created by mad general anthony wayne. it was located on the spot where the auglaize (my river. it's native american for "fallen timbers") and the maumee rivers meet. the area was incredibly rich with native american activity due to the other rivers in the area, but anthony wayne helped take care of that.
unfortunately, the town is not as aptly named as some of the smaller towns. it's pretty straight and narrow. it's pretty conservative. people aren't interested in anything cultural. considering the lack of good places to eat, i question whether they are interested in food. in many ways it's a version of a high school, i think. it's not that people are unfriendly, it's just a very hard place to ever really feel welcome if you are not born and bred. in spite of the mid-size there are several claims to fame. sam hornish, the indy driver, is from here. chad billingsly, the starting pitcher recently called up for the dodgers is from here. there are five or six other baseball players in the farm system of various teams. most of them have a good shot to be in the bigs from what i can tell.

i went to college in defiance at a small liberal arts school. it allowed me to live where i'm now (the 20 minute drive wasn't too bad) and to go in debt. the town has a VERY strange relationship with the college. if you don't actually go to school there, you wouldn't have a clue that it is even there. crazy. there's not much to do, so the campus becomes a wasteland on the weekends with most kids returning home to escape the boredom.

it's probably more than you ever really cared to know about the place. with all that said, i like it here. the river is muddy and mucky, but i have been coming here all my life. as a kid there was nowhere else i wanted to live. i don't know if that will always be true, but i am really digging it on most days.

take care of yourselves,

chamberlain
