Subject: OMG, Ryan sounds exactly like my Jacob(M)
In reply to: Heidi 's message, "#54 - Does anyone's child play golf, or do you? (m)" on 14:39:14 04/15/03 Tue

Around 1.5, Jacob started finding anything and everything to use as golf clubs. For his 2nd b-day we got him a set of Fisher Price plastic clubs, which he uses EVERY day, sometimes ALL day. There are plastic golf balls in every room, under every couch, bed, chair, in the backyard, in the basement, etc. If he can't find his clubs, he again resorts to using ANYTHING he finds that will do.

Not to be a bragging mom, he's really good. He swings as a leftie, although he write with his right hand. Noone has taught him either, but he somehow knows how to hold the clubs properly and drive. He does watch golf with his daddy on tv and has from the beginning. There have been many strangers, including his speech therapist caseworker, that has commented they have never seen such a young kid drive a golf ball like him.

We've contemplated getting him a "real" set and take him to a driving range to start out. I think I'm going to try some of the sporting good re-sale shops in our area.

I've also wondered why he had to fall for a very expensive sport, but I also want to foster in him this talent and a very obvious love. Perhaps he will grow out of this obesession, perhaps not. He has been so into it for so long now, I somehow doubt he will grow out of it.

Anyways...when we were watching The Masters this weekend, they kept advertising some organization that is set up for children interested in learning golf. Perhaps, if you contact them, they would know of some low-cost or some "scholarships" for lessons, etc. The only problem, I couldn't remember what that organziation was called and I can't find it on the web. I'll as dh, see if he remembers, for we were talking about it a lot.

HTH,
Jeanne
