Subject: I golf, and so does Grant (m)
In reply to: Heidi 's message, "#54 - Does anyone's child play golf, or do you? (m)" on 14:39:14 04/15/03 Tue

I took up golfing when I was pregnant (I know... what timing!), and Grant has been asking to golf with me since he was two. I've recently started taking him to the driving range and putting green with me, and we have a blast together. He has two clubs... a 9-iron with a training grip and a putter. That's all he really needs right now. During the next year or so I'll pick up a lower iron (5 maybe), a driver, and a fairway wood. That's all he'll need for the next couple of years. I actually already bought him a golf bag for his Christmas gift this year! I couldn't resist... it's was 50% off :o)

Anyway, the best clubs for kids are made by U.S. Kids Golf. Their clubs are *designed for kids*, not cut-down versions of adult clubs. They're available in 4 or 5 "systems", with each system being designed for a specific height range. Grant is using the blue system, and I believe that would be the one for Ryan as well. The clubs are expensive individually (around $30 each), but sometimes you can find a great deal on a set. Our local sports store has a 5-club plus stand bag set on sale for 40% off right now. If they get more in, I'll probably get it for Grant and then resell the bag on eBay - LOL!

Anyway, here is the link to the main page - www.uskidsgolf.com - and here is the link to the Blue system - http://www.uskidsgolf.com/catalog/blue/main.php.

At this age, it's important to remember that it's all about having fun. Although I try to teach Grant the correct grip and stance, I keep things light. He gets upset with himself if he doesn't hit it very far but I always remind him that "going forward is a good thing, no matter how far it goes" :o) There is plenty of time for him to worry about driving it hard and far. For now, I just want him to get the basics. I'm looking in to golf lessons/camps for him this summer too. I just know he would love it.

Good luck :o) Oh, BTW, here's a link to some pictures from the first time I took him golfing:
