Subject: OT: How long should I expect a vacuum cleaner to last?

We bought a Hoover WindTunnel about three years ago. It's had problems off and on and now it's acting up again. It's cord from the base of the carpet attachment is also very frayed (safety hazard, I know.) It originally cost about $150, so I thought it would last a while. Was I just wrong in my expectations? Also, any recommendations on vacuums in case we need to get a new one?
