Hardly an epidemic, but there have been more than a handful to lose 1st gear in the past few years. More specifically, the synchros for first gear crap out. I bet if you drain the transmission you'll find a bunch of little teeth. A good low-mile junkyard transmission is probably the best way to go, but consider rebuilt one (or get yours rebuilt if you can take the downtime) if possible since a junkyard one could be about to crap out too.
Either way, use only a good GL4 oil in the transmission, NOT a GL4/GL5 oil. Best route is Redline MTL, though it's expensive... Most GL5-rated oils will destroy the synchros and some other parts. There are also new oils that use a boron-based additive (instead of sulfur) that will not harm synchros, but I don't know much else about them as far as who makes them and where to get them. There's a guy (JensenButton) over on the xterrafirma.com forums that knows a lot on the topic.

Good luck,
Brent
