It's a guess of course, and quite honestly a mechanic standing there with the hood up and a set of tools in hand has the advantage over someone on a message board in another state who isn't a mechanic. But...

When you say it happens in the rain, that to me is a tip-off that it's an electrical problem. Fortunatly your Xterra has an onboard diagnostic system that logs what happened the last 500 times you ran the car. If you bring it to a dealer than can just plug it in and read any fault codes.

Sounds minor to me.
