Subject: Noticeably poor fuel economy....any advice welcome

I am the owner of a 2000 Xterra XE. Owning the car for nearly 8 years now, I know it's normal traits and characteristics. Therefore, I could always count on my X getting about 318 miles on a tank in the city and sometimes up to 350 if mostly highway miles.

As I was working abroad for most of the last 18 months, my X sat unused except for occasional driving every couple of months or so (yes, I instructed family to run the thing every week but they did not). Anyway, I recently drove from Georgia to California pulling a Uhaul Trailer. I would say I that I only needed to use the overdrive off feature for about 30-40% of the trip. Anyway, since arriving in Los Angeles and ditching the trailer, my vehicle is getting noticeably terrible gas mileage. Yes, most of the miles are city miles, but I am consistently (over 4 tanks now) going near empty at 260 miles. I have not run the a/c once since being out here and I drive the car no differently than I have over the past 8 years. The only differences are that I installed a class 3 hitch and a new locking gas cap (I had a locking cap fail inspection back in Georgia). I can't see this having anything to do with such a reduced fuel economy.

Could the towing across country have done anything or perhaps the length of time the car sat unused? I have not had any trouble starting the vehicle and it runs just as good as ever. No sluggishness or anything. I'm wondering if injectors need to be cleaned or if there is something else that I wouldn't even think of (I'm no auto mechanic, far from it).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It's a 2000 Xterra XE with approx 86,000.

Thanks!
