Subject: Fuel pump died

Driving in to work yesterday, my Xterra died. I was sure the timing belt had let go by the way it quit...completely and quickly. The shop tells me it's the fuel pump, and the cost for replacement (parts and labor) is around $600! I have 105,000 miles on it. Have there been other experiences with this?
Also, how difficult is it to change the timing belt assuming I have reasonable mechanical skills, tools and experience?
