If you're climing a hill, passing, fighting a stiff headwind, etc, turn it off. Otherwise it's OK to be on. To really do it right, pay attention to your RPMs and be able to tell when the transmission torque converter is in lockup or not. In lockup, your RPMs are the usual for a given speed (2600 @ 70 MPH, etc.) but out of lockup they're about 600 RPM higher at the same speed. When out of lockup, the transmission heats up quickly, but turning off the overdrive forces the transmission to downshift to 3rd gear where it will stay in lockup pretty tenaciously and keep the temps down.

As for hitches, the Nissan one is of course good, but pretty much any Class-3 hitch made for the Xterra will do just fine.
