Of course, I am quite indigenous to Massachusetts, so New York State is "Out West" to me, and I just know what I have read. But it seems to me it's more than just the heat that makes Death Valley unusual. I would think the lack of water and that it's below Sea Level would enter into it.

I've always wanted to visit the place. Read a book by the late, great, Colin Fletcher once, called "Thousand Mile Summer". In it, he walked the length of California during the course of one summer. The part where he walked the length of Death Valley, (after caching water along that part of the route), was the most interesting.

Anyone here ever visited Death Valley?
