Subject: Panic alarm and security system

I just purchased a 2001 Nissan XTerra (LOVE IT!) but the panic alarm or something went off when someone opened the door. . .but when we tried to do it again. . .it didn't go off. What sets the thing off in the 1st place?? HELP
