The efforts by Senators Arlen Specter and Joseph Biden and House of Representatives member Curt Weldon came a day after the government's war crimes ambassador said the United States planned to investigate and prosecute human rights abuses with Iraqi oversight. "This is not just to remove Saddam Hussein from power," said Weldon, a member of the House Armed Forces and Homeland Security Committee. "This is about a regime that has done more to violate human rights since Adolf Hitler and Josef Stalin." "We expect the regime and the leaders in Baghdad to understand that, down to the very soldier and officer level, that we will hold them accountable," Weldon said. Specter last week filed a Senate resolution to create an international court on Iraqi war crimes after seven US soldiers and three civilians were killed in separate suicide car bombings near military checkpoints. Earlier the politicians pressed for a joint House-Senate bill that would push the issue to President George Bush's desk more quickly.
