Subject: GUITAR WORLD - Top 100 Metal Guitarists of All Time

In the May 2004 issue of GUITAR WORLD, the editors have included Vivian Campbell, Phil Collen and Steve Clark in what they think are the 100 greatest metal guitarists of all time: "this is not a list that ranks who can play the fastest or with the most taste, feeling or technique. It is a tribute to the great men who shit iron and piss stainless steel razor blades, and do it every time they plug into an amplifier". The top 5 consists of:

1. Tony Iommi (Black Sabbath)
2. Kirk Hammett & James Hetfield (Metallica)
3. Angus & Malcolm Young
4. Randy Rhoads (Quiet Riot/Ozzy Osbourne)
5. Eddie van Halen (Van Halen)

About Vivian, who ended up #29, the list says: "The Irish-born Campbell provided true grit on Dio's solo debut, spewing laserlike lines on songs like 'HOLY DIVER' and 'RAINBOW IN THE DARK'. His trademark 'shaking the chords' technique is still unparallelled".
Phil & Steve, who were placed #41 as a collective: "Through a boatload of hits the two created a seamless bank of instantly hooky riffs, scorching melodic solos and walls of sonic sheen".
After being confronted with their positions, Vivian replied: "Wow, hahaha. Pretty nice, I'm flattered actually, being at 29. I don't agree with putting Iommi on number 1 though..... Randy Rhoads and Eddie van Halen should've been higher than that at least!"
Phil shared Vivian's opinion on Iommi being at the top of the list: "Well..... If he's all the way up there, what does that say about the entire list then, really? But yeah, it's nice to be there with Steve. I should see a doctor though, after pissing stainless steel razors!"
