Author: Emma [ Next Thread | Previous Thread | Next Message | Previous Message ] Date Posted: 10:31:34 08/09/04 Mon In reply to: Rachel 's message, "Re: How much does a rescue horse cost??" on 19:48:47 07/27/04 Tue A rescue horse can cost from $250 AUD for a pony from the pet food guy to about $400 depends on the size of the horse. from rescue places they can be around $1000 or under. the pet food places and rescue can have some real bargens but unless u are very experenced u can end up with a horse with soundness issues and emotional issues. even the experenced make big mistakes.my advice is that if your are not experenced horse handler these horses can be unsutable as they can have emotional problems personaly i would try to find a horse through word of mouth or adds in mags.be carfull some horses are cheep for a reason!! And Get a vet check thats the most important thing. a cheep horse that is unridable costs the same as a good one that u can ride posably more. if u can take an expert along with u this will help u a lot. I speak from experience a i have a beautiful looking 13.1 mare who can nolonger be ridded and has a tendency to rear, buck in hand and under saddle she bucks bolts etc... kicked out at my mum! she has had a hip fracture posably around the age of 4 and now has a locking stifel hence i dont ride her as she could fall over. i bought her of someone i trusted who was my riding instructor at the time with out a vet check. i was silly! it was my first pony. i spent about 12 months training her up to the point i took her to pony club befor i retiered her. i know only work her in hand to keep her "nice". i have no choice but to keep her as due to her problems the only thing i could do would be to put her down! but i love her!!! other tips... spend as much on a horse as u can! cut back on other stuff!! one good rug is worth 4 average ones!! dont keep your horse in bad agistment it is more costly in vet bills.
