Danny Nee adds local point guard to Dukes roster

Both Pittsburgh newspapers are reporting in Wednesday's editions that Duquesne's new head coach Danny Nee (right) has added a local Pittsburgh point guard to his roster.

Tyler Bluemling, a 6-2 point guard from Mt Lebanon High School has signed a "letter of intent" with the Atlantic 10 school. (Note: since this commitment occured after the spring signing period ended, the NLI rules do not apply.)

Bluemling had verbally committed to Navy in the fall but since Patriot League schools don't provide athletic scholarships, he had not signed a national letter of intent at that time.

Bluemling was going to prep at the Naval Academy Preparation School in Rhode Island for a year before enrolling at the academy in Annapolis, Md. He had until July 1 to sign a contract with a recruiting officer. Graduation from the Naval Academy would have also included five years of post graduate service

Bluemling will redshirt this year. He told Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporter Ray Fittipaldo, "Coach Nee told me I would mostly be a role player."

He had been playing pick-up games at Duquesne's Palumbo Center for the past six weeks. Former Dukes walk-on Andrew Gans, who was a teammate of Bluemling's at Mt. Lebanon High School, is a roommate of Dukes senior star Wayne Smith and introduced Bluemling to the games.

Bluemling averaged 21.7 points and 3.5 rebounds per game last season for Mt. Lebanon, where he finished with 1,665 career points. He received WPIAL Class AAAA first team honors from both newspapers. Bluemling is fully qualified with a 3.6 grade-point average and 1,020 SAT score.

Dave Mackall of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that he was also recruited by the College of Charleston, Eastern Michigan and North Carolina-Ashville.

Duquesne's point guard position seems to be a question still. Last season, the Dukes used two shooting guards (senior Courtney Wallace and sophomore Kevin Forney) in the lead spot with less than positive success.

J-S Esposito, a true point guard who saw very little action as a freshman last year, did not have his scholarship renewed for the upcoming season. The previous coaches had signed three players during the fall signing period but all (Leonard Harden, Shaheem McNair and Lewis Monroe) were released from their NLIs by Coach Nee. McNair was a true point guard.

Nee and Duquesne did sign two players during the early signing period. Highly recruited 6-10, 225-pound center Simplice Njoya, a Cameroon-native who attended The Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY, and 6-3, 195-pound guard Aly Samabaly, a Mali-native who attended the famed St. Vincent-St. Mary High School program in Akron, OH, last year with super-soph LeBron James. He played the wing guard position as a senior.

All three freshman are enrolled in summer school at the Pittsburgh campus, as allowed by a recent NCAA rule change.

There are indications that Samabaly could handle the point guard responsibilities with one or more of the other returning guards also covering that position. Duquesne has two more scholarships available for the 2001-02 season which could make the above-discussion moot. Or Coach Nee could have something entirely different in mind.
