Subject: task 14

Teachers must evaluate students not only for their ability of producing correct sentences, but also for how they use the language, the social contexts involved (Hymes). Learning a language is not just about beeing able to produce grammatical correct sentences but knowing its appliance, the social and linguistic aspects of it. The teacher has an important role in the students learning process, and he/she must do such thing by providing them both aspects of the language, accuracy and appropriance. Teachers can do that through real-life situation tasks, for example. The teacher could present students a movie, sketches, listenings, containing conversations or dialogues (real life situation) where students would have to get information out of the them (Littlewood, 1981). And he/she could also ask students to work in pairs or small groups and disscuss about it. To sum up, teachers should consider both aspects of the language (accuracy and appropriance) to evaluate students.
