The use of portfolios is a great way to assess student�s progress. Not only because the teacher may then have a record of his/her student�s development, but also because the student can take an active role in his/her own leaning process. By seeing what is improving and what is still wanting, the student has the opportunity to focus on his/her needs. Assessing his/her own performance makes the student feel more in control and responsible for his/her learning.
For the teacher, especially those with a great number of students, portfolios are an invaluable tool to keep track of students� skills growth. It is of great help in giving feedback. Feedback is something that should be done objectively and having a record of the student�s progress makes it so. The teacher may use concrete examples of what he/she is saying to the student.
Another advantage of portfolios is parental participation. It�s easier for the parents to follow their children�s learning if they can see what has been done. They can then monitor and participate in the student�s development, and thus become the teacher�s collaborator.
