The use of portfolios is a great way to assess student’s progress. Not only because the teacher may then have a record of his/her student’s development, but also because the student can take an active role in his/her own leaning process. By seeing what is improving and what is still wanting, the student has the opportunity to focus on his/her needs. Assessing his/her own performance makes the student feel more in control and responsible for his/her learning.
For the teacher, especially those with a great number of students, portfolios are an invaluable tool to keep track of students’ skills growth. It is of great help in giving feedback. Feedback is something that should be done objectively and having a record of the student´s progress makes it so. The teacher may use concrete examples of what he/she is saying to the student.
Another advantage of portfolios is parental participation. It’s easier for the parents to follow their children’s learning if they can see what has been done. They can then monitor and participate in the student’s development, and thus become the teacher’s collaborator.
