Subject: Task 15

How can we use portfolios to evaluate our students' progress?
Portfolios are a very useful tool for both teachers and students think over assessment (and self-assessment as well). We can have students keep a folder with the assignments produced along the year; then, we could go over the most important ones as a means of solving students’ doubts and reinforcing some concepts that were not very clear. Teachers must encourage students to go over their assignments once they are given back the corrected version. It would defeat the purpose of the task just correcting it without giving any valid feedback to the student (and even worse, without the student taking notice of such feedback).

It is important that teachers perceive students’ faults and be able to talk about them without causing any kind of embarrassment in the classroom. Students must feel that they are learning from their mistakes and that such feedback is a positive aspect of their learning process.
