How can we use portfolios to evaluate our students' progress?

To use portfolios to evaluate our students’ progress we might firstly define two concepts. The first one is what a portfolio is and the second point is about the way the portfolios are going to be applied and evaluated.

Portfolios are pieces of work produced during a term. It was firstly used in art branches, such as painting, in order to demonstrate a brief idea about the whole work. In language classes it has been increasingly used in order to evaluate the students’progress. Although the classes are related to language, videotapes and other material that can contribute to the learning process can be included within the portfolio as well.

The language teacher must think of the class’ aspects such as age and grade before apply the portfolios to the class. These aspects can influence in the assessment since they portfolios’final elaboration depends on each one’s knowledge, experience and ability. For instance, younger students’portfolios can not be assessed the same way older students’portfolios are. In fact, the older students are able to elaborate better a work than the younger students.

The portfolios are a good opportunity for the teacher to see the way the students reflect and face the language learning process. As a consequence, the teacher has the opportunity to make a self evaluation about the teaching process. For instance, supposing that a student includes a recorded song within the portfolio, the teacher may understand that that student is able to listen and understand that song.

Portfolios can be used in communicative classes since they promote the students’engagement in the work, what make them act more interacted among each others.
