Portfolios are defined as “ collections of student work representing a selection of performance”; in other words, it is a collection of written and/or recorded material produced by the learners in a period of time. It is useful for teachers because it is possible to follow students’ progress and identify problems. Moreover, learners can be evaluated by what they did. According to Sweet, “many teachers, educators, and researchers believe that portfolio assessments are more effective than ‘old-style’ tests for measuring academic skills and informing instructional decisions’.

Portfolios are also helpful for students who would not only save work, but also reflect on their findings share with others. The content of the portfolio will vary and it depends on what the classroom curriculum and students’ needs. Furthermore, the development and use of the material produced will also vary according to students’ age and grade level. Another point is that portfolios programs can be built to “engage students, support good curricula and instruction, and improve student teaming” or “to serve other purposes as well”. They can positive to compare classrooms or schools, to involve parents, etc.

By using portfolios, teachers can show students how to evaluate their own work and their classmates’. Learners would also be aware of their progress and doubts, trying to develop strategies to achieve their goals.
