How can we use portfolios to evaluate our students' progress?

A portfolio is a collection of works done by the students, which will reflect how much of the content the students learned, since the works are basically activities given in the classroom or as homework. It is interesting to let the students decide which activity is important and/or good enough to go to the portfolio. Of course depending on the level and specially on the age of the pupil, some support might be required to make this choice. This way, students would be building their own concept of what a good work is.

Portfolio provides the opportunity of multiple feedbacks. Students can share their portfolios amongst them, commenting each others and sahring experience. They can also show to their parents, and, this for younger students, there can be a special part of it reserved for other people to place their comments about the pupil’s work.

It is important to observe how the technique will be introduced to the class. Teachers cannot just impose it. It has to be, first of all, like every new thing in a classroom, enthusiastically. Students have to feel it is going to be fun and profitable, or they will not do it. Then, by an agreement on how it is going to be used.

As we can see, portfolios can be used to observe the progress of the students throughout the course. The progress can be checked by the own students, their parents and, of course, teachers. Hence the evaluation comes. Evaluating through portfolios provides better, more trustful results than traditionla testing, since it is normal that some people simply do not do well in exams, and it is a long term evaluation, giving students more opportunities to show that they understood the subject.
