ANSWER TASK 14
How can we test communicative competence?

Considering that the basic idea of communicative competence remains the ability to use language appropriately, both receptively and productively, in real situations, we should test students in a context-specific.
In listening activities we should test not whether the students understand a sentence that they listen to, but place this sentence in a context and see if they can respond appropriately to it.
Communicative competence in writing should be tested giving the students realistic reasons for they do that task. For example, if we ask the students to summarize a long passage of 400 words, to 100 words approximately, the reason could be that these 100 words would be used in a talk.
Communicative competence in speaking should be tested verifying if the student assessed the ability in carrying out the functions required by the situation. In a role play in which a student missed a class and needs going to the teacher’s office and apologize for having missed the class, the functions required could be: apologizing, requesting, asking for information, responding to suggestion, etc.
