How can we use portfolios to evaluate our students’ progress?

Portfolios are collections of student’s assignments done during a certain period of time, normally displayed in a folder to be handed in to the teacher at the end of a term.

They are alternative ways of checking the process of teaching and learning and they have been adpoted by teachers and schools, due to the annoyance with the traditional methods to assess students.

One of the advantages of introducing portfolios as assessment is that students become more responsible, very different from traditional testing that has an specific format with the purpose of scoring students. Sometimes the only feedback they have are the results printed in a list. With portfolios they will be interested in keeping the best of their tasks, they will be carefull to present a really good work. By doing this they are analyzing, they are giving a second look, they are learning.

Also, as Adams and Hamm (1992); “ Portfolios can be used as a tool in the classroom to bring students together, to discuss ideas, and to provide evidence of understanding and the way to apply it. Through critical analysis of their work – and of their peers – students gain insight into other ways of looking at a problem.”

Because portifolios are written material they favor more writing than the other skills, but it is possible to include audiotapes and videotapes in the folder. Depending on the purpose, they can also have: tests, quizzes, homework, student diary entries, log of work on a particular assignment, etc.

It’s due to the teacher to implement portfolios and give the directions of how students will keep and organize them. Besides of how to handle with them, the teacher has to bear in mind that portfolios above all must have a clear purpose.
