Global Experience Specialists, a contractor that sets up shows at McCormick Place, was cited with four safety violations by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration Thursday in relation to a forklift accident that left an exhibitor seriously injured in September. The company faces fines of $91,000.

The citations stem from an accident at the International Manufacturing Technology Show in which Thomas Neuhengen, the spare parts manager for exhibitor Hermle Machine Co. LLC, nearly lost his foot.

Neuhengen was struck by a GES worker operating a forklift, OSHA found.

A staff sergeant in the Wisconsin Army National Guard, Neuhengen did two tours of duty in Iraq. The trade show accident, and his long recovery, were reported by the Tribune in November.

One violation was "willful," OSHA said. The company was cited for failing to ensure powered industrial truck operators are trained.

Three others were "serious," meaning there is substantial probability that death or serious physical harm could result from a hazard which the employer knew about or should have known about.

The company was cited for not ensuring sufficient safe clearance to operate a forklift in aisles, loading docks and doorways; for failing to train forklift operators in site-specific hazards, such as pedestrian traffic areas; and for exposing worker to fall hazards during rigging operations.

"Employers, such as Global Experience Specialists, who rely on the use of forklifts in their daily operations, have a responsibility to train their workers in proper operations and to correct deficiencies immediately to prevent hazardous incidents from occurring," said Gary Anderson, OSHA's area director in Calumet City. "OSHA is committed to protecting workers on the job, especially when employers fail to do so."

Las Vegas-based GES, one of the major contractors working at McCormick Place, could not be reached for immediate comment.

GES has been inspected 26 times by OSHA since 1993, resulting in the issuance of 74 citations.

The company has 15 business days to comply, or to contest the findings before the independent Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission.

The fucking exhibitors need to be trained or keep em off the show floor til the show opens. Exhibits really don't need to be fulled staffed during move in. Sales don't start until the show opens so keep unnecessary personnel off the show floor until the aisle carpet is down. Period.

The show was the Machine tool show in Chicago. It used to be a 50,000,000 lb. show.
