Dear Mary, was trawling through the 1881 Census and came across one William Appleby age 60 which would make him the same age as your William but his birthplace is listed as Dedham. He may have been confused as to where he was born or the guy doing it might have asked were his family lived and got the answer Dedham. He is listed as been Master of Wherry, the address being River Wensum Norwich St Swithins Norfolk. He is also so married ie not a widower,. Hope this of some use Virginia
