Subject: APPLEBY - Sheffield Flood (1864)

I am re-posting details of the APPLEBY family who died in the Sheffield Flood (12th March 1864) as I would dearly love to contact a descendant of this family.

Other names associated with this family are MARSHALL, BEARDMORE, KINSEY, SWIFT, DENNY (or DEMMY) and NIGHTINGALE. The details I have so far are:

Mary APPLEBY (nee MARSHALL) drowned in the flood. (Born 1801 married Cowton APPLEBY on 30.6.1823. Cowton was born 12.3.1802 in Scarborough, exactly 62 years to the day before Mary drowned. He died somewhere before the census in 1861. His parents were John and Mary and he had brothers William and John.)

Mary and Cowton had 10 children:

1. Mary Anne APPLEBY (born 14.4.1824 Winster) married on 14.10.1849 to John BEARDMORE with children Sarah A (born 1857) and George (born 1859)
2. Stephen Cowton APPLEBY (born 25.10.1825 Winster) married on 8.5.1849 to Elizabeth KINSEY. Their daughter Mary APPLEBY drowned in the flood at the age of just 13.
3. Eliza Christiana APPLEBY (born 30.10.1826 Winster) married to Charles SWIFT (born 1832 about Cromford) with daughter Ann E (born 1860 in Sheffield)
4. Ann Elizabeth APPLEBY (born 23.1.1828 Winster) married to Mr Denny or Mr Demmy??
5. John APPLEBY (chr 18.4.1830 Winster) married on 14.11.1849 to Ellen NIGHTINGALE.
6. Martha APPLEBY (chr 13.3.1831 Winster)
7. John Cowton APPLEBY drowned in the flood at the age of about 37. Married to Ellen (born about 1839 and died between 1861 and 1864) with children George (born 1860) and Annie Maria (born 1861)
8. Charles APPLEBY (born 28.6.1834 Winster)
9. William APPLEBY (born 29.10.1836 Winster- twin)
10. Cowton APPLEBY (born 29.10.1836 Winster - twin) married to Sarah A (born about 1840) with children William Cowton (born 1860), Charles (born 1863), Herbert (born 1869), Ernest (born 1871), Mary (born 1874) and Edith (born 1878)

I would love to hear from anyone who can fit any of the above into their family line.
