Thought I would share this with you, not sure if it will help or not. I do know there is a Plaque in the Town of Mazomanie, Wisconsin about the Applebee/Appleby who invented the Knotter. You could contact someone there. The plaque drew my interest because I to am from a Applebee bloodline.
I also did a bit more checking and I found this website that had messages posted about who invented the Knotter.

john appleby from whitewater wi was working for two men in beloit wi on reapers and came up with the knotter drive mechanism.he sold the patent to mccormick for $35,000. plus $6.00 for each reaper sold.he then worked for mccormick in chicago.there is a stone plaque on the intersection of hwy 12,20,and 67 east of whitewater at the farm where appleby grew up and came up with the tying idea wrapping two vines together in the garden as a teenager.he olso served in the civil war.
