I was kinda wondering what was going on, after that last death I had and upon returning to a game I found I had not lost any experience points which was surprisingly a real good thing! Here what Bliz had to say...

The U.S. East Battle.net and Diablo II Realm servers are currently experiencing
intermittent connectivity. Symptoms include increased lag and [loss] of connection to
Battle.net. This issue is with the ISP's network and is affecting various Internet
servers. The ISP is working on the issue, and should have a resolution within a few
hours. Thank you for your patience.
