So, after reading Matthew Inman's funny & informative essay on what it's like to have owned a Tesla Model S for 6 months, I have to say, I've been thinking even longer and harder about the odd romanticization we 'Murkins grant to personal conveyance vehicles.. Yes, every time I see a Dodge Charger or Challenger or new Camaro, Corvette or FR8/BRZ, my head still turns. It's a deep-seeded/(-seated?), instinctive covetous urge. A colleague here pointed out that a lot of it comes from our national sense of personal freedom, and I think that's correct. Anyway, it seems it's not necessarily a bad idea to try to evolve the urge to something a little more sustainable. Of course, I cannot get that excited about a Nissan Leaf or even the Chevy Volt.. That BMW ain't bad, and considering the suspected drop in operating costs, may not be out of range. Also, Tesla is talking about the Model 3 being available by 2017 at an even more favourable price point. My 2005 Scooby should still be going strong by then, I think/hope (only at 139k at the moment, although a couple of door dings are starting to show oxidization, which I need to address). Clearly, my struggle with a love of American automobile tech is not doing well..
