The crystal doll's dancing merrily rould and round to the tune of "Fur Elise" tinkling softly in the music box. Holding it carefully in her hands, the halogen lamp shone on the dancing doll reflected multi-coloured rays on Vanessa's lovely face. We're staring at each other's eyes. My hand brushed her thigh gently underneath the table.
Time stood still.
In the dimly lit coffee shop.
I was breathless under her charms.
I was ravished by her mysterious smile.
It could have been a perfect setting for the beginning of a relationship if we're not strongly attached to our lovers. I would have told her more about myself. I would have gotten to know her better. Or we would have made love in her place instead of sitting in that coffee shop to wait for Fatty and Jin finishing their shopping spree.
Just like me, she's an impatient shopper and would never stay at any department store for more than an hour. Vanessa and I finished our shopping in less than 30 minutes and decided to wait for them in a coffee shop nearby.
"Thanks for the music box. It's very nice. I thought you bought it for Iris....or Maggie.. or....hehe," she grinned.
"You're welcome. Just a friendly gesture. By the way, why didn't you let me pay for your clothings?" I smiled back. Actually, I wanted to pay for the clothings she bought but she just refused.
.
"Like you said, just a friendly gesture, right? We're friends, aren't we?" she quipped.
"Of course, we are. But is it normal for a friend to pay for his friend's clothings?" I asked.
"It's normal for a man to buy clothings for his girlfriend," she answered.
"Aren't you my girlfriend," I asked half-jokingly.
"No!" she replied bluntly.
"Even we had made....love...last night..." I said quietly and shyly.
"Honestly, I had slept with lots of guys in Beijing before meeting Bob and I didn't reckon they are my boyfriends. How come you're so old-fashioned?" she said.
My heart sank. On the other hand, I was relieved.
"Hahaha...Yes, I must admit that I am an old-fashined man, A square head, to be exact," I laughed while trying to hide my embarrassment and mixed feelings.
"Old-fashioned man and yet so many girls you have, hehehe.." she chuckled.
"..........." I was speechless.
In the following hours, we hadn't stopped talking. About music. About books. About Arts. We seemed to have endless topics to talk about, except Bob, Iris and Maggie.
"Would you like to stay at my place tonight?" she asked casually when Fatty and Jin finally shown up.
"No, thanks. I don't think so," I answered without hestitation.
At that moment, I realized she was just a passer-by in my life. And I believed she must had the same thought too.
The crystal doll's dancing merrily round and round in her hands again.
"Well, goodbye then. Maybe we'll meet again soon," she punched my shoulder gently and said.
"Goodbye, Vanessa," I replied and hugged her tightly.
To be continued.......
