"Neither flop nor hit" -- really quite similar to the reception Buffy got, happily puttering along with a hardcore fanbase (I hear there are even websites and forums!) and occasionally roping in people as it went.

To my mind, the whole story -- from the pilot episode to the film -- is a great success. Joss I think has succeeded in making a show that "100 people need to see" (and not "1000 people like to see.")

The emotional engagement I know folks felt on watching the film was intense. So what, the utterly disposable Flightplan like "won"? Please.

Just reminding people that, while it's been fun to "play executive" and I totally googled to see what the box office return was, that's not really what it's about. It's about making art, original, bold art that sometimes falls flat on its face and sometimes just rocks out, really in-your-face vulnerable stuff. IMO, Whedon rocked it out of the park. (I agree with others who have said the film seems to be a perfect closing point -- actually, if a sequel were made, I'd love to see a prequel: the Book backstory, the Tam family meltdown, the civil war, it's frigging gold.
