Subject: Willow's Plot Twist

Was reading last week some TV criticism that speculated on plot twists in "Lost" (a show I am not familiar with), and whether or not the actors were aware at the beginning of the show what strange secrets some of the their characters held. The writer mentioned that Lili Taylor was enraged when she discovered that the character she played on "Six Feet Under" had had a secret affair. Taylor was unaware of this until after her character had died and she was reduced to appearing in a few dream sequences and flashbacks. I assume her anger stems from the way she had approached the part and built her character, which would have been substantially different if she had known that her character was a much more devious and complicated person.

Alyson Hannigan has said that she did not know her character was lesbian until Joss Whedon called her and Amber Benson in to his office during the filming of season four (amazingly, Amber Benson did not know either, until after some of her first scenes were shot). From things that Whedon has said and done, he knew from at least early in season 3 that Willow would be--not become--lesbian.

Was this fair from the point of view of professionalism? Shouldn't an actor know what kind of person she is portraying before she gets in front of the camera? Was Whedon afraid that Hannigan would tip the secret in season 3 through the way she played the character, if she was aware of the twist?
