You know, I wonder if the writers ever considered the details you bring up. The main arc of the story seemed to me that the enemy tactic, with the help of Spike, was to split up Buffy and her friends: to divide and conquer. Their uniting to defeat the enemy was a refutation of the tactic--and a metaphor, of sorts, of how close and effective Buffy and her friends were. It was a good story, as always, but it may have violated some of the rational points you bring up.
