Subject: Souls: Do they Damn vampires?

Recently, while talking to some people about Buffy, there arose some differing viewpoints on the nature of the soul and what, exactly, it does to a vampire if returned to them.

Their viewpoint was that giving a vampire a soul forces the soul to become dirtied with all the sins that the vampire committed and therefore Damns that soul for all eternity and leaves no chance for redemption. They claim that Angel verified this fact.

HOWEVER, it was my impression that Angel was -always- seeking redemption, which meant that there had to be a form of redemption for him, even if he never endured Trials for his soul (like Spike did).

Because I don't have access to the episodes, I can't say for sure who is right. Please, if anyone has any light to shed on the subject, go ahead and post it. If you have any references/canonical evidence, that's even better. I look forward to hearing your thoughts.
