I've got to agree with you, manwitch. You make me recall a DVD extra bit (which DVD? not THAT much recall) where James Marsters says something like (note: not a direct quote)

"I'm not Spike. Spike is me, and this guy (his stunt double) and the writers and the director and the cameraman and all those guys (indicating the crew). We make him together"

He couldn't have been the Spike we love (and hate) without James. Neither could he have been quite the same character without the entire crew. Try to think of Spike without his big black eeeevil coat (Nikki's coat). Can't do it.
