I've always understood Conner's action, even if I didn't agree with them. His first choice which occurred at the end of season 3 was out of being manipulated by Holtz.

Whenever I begin to questio whether or not Conner's choices are understandable, I always think to myself, he was raised in a segregated unfavorable environment by the person he thought of as his father who most likely abused him. He was raised to hate Angel and if that is your only truth and youhad no other influences then it can be difficult to unlearn or fight against.

I've always felt that Conner was conflicted and easily manipulated and also if he were to reconcile with Angel that meant that everything he believed was a lie and he couldn't be sure that Angel's love wasn't a lie either.

I preferred Conner at the end of season 4 because we begin to get an insight into why Conner feels the way he does. He wanted the conflict gone, he wanted to rest and he even thought he would fight Angel one more time so that he that it couldn't be taken away from him.

His actions were understandable and his reasons were more complex. The thing that surprised me is that he never really hated Angel, a lot of what he reasons he was fighting for were more about the context of his relationship with Angel rather than resenting Angel himself.
