As far as the metaphor goes, it was probably a device invented for the original concept of the season, which was largely based around SMG and Maggie competing for Riley's devotion or love.

Of course, that's before Lindsay Crouse bailed and they had to switch to having Adam as the Big Bad...and with all the other stuff they were dealing with (Seth bailing, trying to smoothly transition to "college Buffy" adjusting the group dynamic with Angl and Cordy missing), they probably didn't spend a lot of time rethinking the metaphors and just tried to get through season...so in the end, it's just kind of a left over metaphor for a plot line that never got developed.
