I don't think there's much of a mystery as to how the Others know so much about the passengers. Ethan lived with them for several days, and undoubtedly reported back in that time - just as Goodwin did with the other group on the other side of the island. Also, they had Claire in their possession for a while after they kidnapped her (and we still don't know why they took her or why they let her go). They seem to be pretty good a sneaking around unseen, so they've probably been observing everyone from concealment since then.

It's pretty clear that the Others have something to do with Dharma and whatever went wrong there, so I'm sure we'll find out more about that connection in due time.

I'm wondering what happened to Desmond and Rousseau? They each headed for the hills independently, and haven't been seen since.
