There's no message. As Michael says, who's to say she was even asked to do a commentary or appearance? Unless someone has said that she refused to take part then everything is mere speculation.

In any event, these commentaries don't sell the DVDs really, the people who are interested are those who would largely in any event buy them. There's no duty owed to anyone, either fans or creators, because it's a nice extra, nothing more or less. Not a sign of enduring love.

It's also pointless speculating whether or not an actress could have played Buffy better. There are certainly better actresses out there, but who's to say any of them would have been as successful in this role?

I'd also note that the vast amount of extras and commentaries (barring season 7) were done while the show was being recorded. SMG as the lead actor had far less time to spend/available to take part in these because she was in many of the scenes, unlike the others. Her absence in the bloopers is perhaps explained by the fact that time and again in interviews and commentaries everyone says she usually got it right first time.
