That was a show girls could watch with their parents and not feel embarrassed, ashamed, or judged, or feel like they were giving in to their parents interests. Or so I imagine. One Tree Hill don't fit that bill. I would have to stab myself in the eyeballs if my kid wanted to watch that.

This seems exactly right. I started watching Buffy because my daughter had seen a preview of the show and asked me to watch it with her. This was a significant request in our family -- I don't watch TV other than occasional sporting events. I hadn't watched any TV show in 20 years (MASH) and I discouraged TV watching by the kids. Still, she wanted to watch this show but was worried it would be scary, so she asked me to watch with her. I bit my tongue and agreed.

We got hooked together. My wife and other daughter started watching a little later and it became a family event.

My sentiments exactly on the other shows.
