I agree with adding only this. At least then he was funny, his character many times was pivotal too both the shows comedic success and Buffy's well being. (What didn't he save her life 2 or 3 times in the first season). I don't know for some to say that he had grown emotionally so that was why he needn't "build the wall of funnyness" is just too easy. I know emotionally mature people who can be mature and funny simultaneously. It was really the Xander character that implemented and perfected the Buffy speak that I really always enjoyed about the show.
