Subject: Wesley's good deed

"and in fact it's Angel's selfish desire not to be parted from him that results in the success of Holtz's revenge"

Is that the inflammatory remark to which you refer? Yes yes, its Angel's fault that Wesley couldn't reflect back on his own years of experience with Angel to know that Angel was not going to kill his son UNLESS...

And of course, with all his education, Wesley surely knew that if you try to outsmart a prophecy, you never actually bring it violently and immediately into being. A brief glance at the greeks tells us that never happens.

My frustration with Wes, and again, I like the dude well enough, was with his trusting rationality and logic over his own lived experience and the requirements of his own heart. Or at least, and this will no doubt get me into trouble, what should have been the requirements of his own heart.

I agree with Giles when he says, on his deathbed, "That's what I've always admired about you Buffy, the ability to put your heart before all else." Or something like that. He says something like that. I think what Buffy was saying to Wesley was "You are trying rationally to perform the specific role you feel it is proper for you to play and to do so within the provided rules. I'm concerned with the welfare of people I love." That's the difference that Wesley does not grasp, whether he acted logically or not. His loyalty and devotion, rather than his suspicion and betrayal, should have been with Angel. Wes should have known well enough that the prophecy will find a way to act itself out regardless. His loyalty also should have been with the group, which is why he should not have acted unilaterally. But Wes has tens of years of imprinting about the evil of vampires and just couldn't overcome it.

So I don't disagree with your description of wesley's situation, his knowledge that the decision was his alone, his mistaken opinion of Holtz, etc. I merely fault him for it.

My opinion, of course.
