What do we make of the fact that, after all this happened and the kid grew up, the prophecy still apparently came true in the mall that day?
I take the cynical view that in the Buffyverse, “All prophecies come true except for those that don’t”. And even when they do come to pass, they are usually fulfilled in an unanticipated manner. Based on the history of prophecy in the Buffyverse, I think anyone who tailors their actions to prophecy should seriously reevaluate their epistemological approach. Of course, I personally do not believe in prophecy, fate, destiny or any of the teleological views of life. To me, it is all probabilistic, the collapse of the quantum mechanical wave function. No sense fretting over it, just do the best you can. Still, I seem to continually engage in endless debates about the meaning of the prophecies and whether they have in fact been fufilled and in what manner and when. Maybe the fact that I find the outcome of these debates meaningless is why I enjoy participating.
