I agree...this always bothered me as well. It's one thing if Xander brought this forth, but didn't realize it 'til the very end. However, as it plays out, Xander makes it seem as if he knew all along. I think the writers had Xander fess up in the manner he did just for a humorous effect, though at the detriment to the plot. All they would have had to do is just make it seem like Xander was finally piecing it together at the end. Then we wouldn't have to decide if Xander was making a questionable ethical choice by hiding information.
