I read what you wrote with interest, but I must confess that I automatically thought of Angel and Mal as completely different types of people. We are pattern seeking animals, and of course, Whedon created both characters, so we look for similarities.
While Mal does fret over the loss to the empire, it is not the deep brooding of Angel (which DB really nailed!).
The injection of humor is part of Whedon's genius, so his characters, even the dumb ones, are going to sound witty--even if it is unintentional on the part of the less bright characters.
