An kept her face hidden in her hands as she replied to the knight. "I thank you for your concern, sir, and for saving my life earlier. I owe you much. In fact, I don't know that I can ever repay you the service you have done me. But there is nothing you can do to help me now. It was no fault of yours or anyone else's that my good father and mother have passed on. You must understand that. You did what you could, and no one can ask more of you than that. They are gone. There is nothing anyone can do. That is the way of things." Her voice wavered throughout her speech, and her thin frame shook as if it would break. She leaned forward, letting Frederick's unnoticed hand slide off her shoulder, and hugged the horse's neck as a babe hugs its mother. She buried her face in the horse's mane and succumbed to her sobs.
