Subject: North Sydney RAW Recap For 07/28/02

Unlike in some of the past shows, this one got right to the action, skipping the opening promo to dictate what we are going to see tonight.

NOTE: Match times are timed from first contact between wrestlers to the final bell.

FIRST MATCH
Sinder vs. Scott Savage
First off, I`ll note that I`m not sure whether it`s Sinder or Sidner- so if I get it wrong that`s a mistake you`ll have to deal with for the rest of this report!
Seeing as how Sinder is in the ring to wrestle, our referee for this contest in James Ash.
This face vs. face contest kind of had the crowd flat. They didn`t seem to know who to cheer for, although I think most appreciated the sportsmanship with the handshake at the end.
The crowd involvement was basically our side of the ring applauding for the spots during the match. This was a match that is becoming typical of RAW openers- two young guys who can do some good stuff, but are green. To credit both competitors, they made a good attempt to work a well-balanced match, starting off slowly with some locking up (although this didn`t really suit the match in the fact that it wasn`t a lengthy encounter).
I don`t remember many of the paticulars, but once again, it was a good effort from two younger wrestlers who will take some time to stop making the rookie mistakes. Good opener with a good finish. Savage scores the win with a cross bodyblock off the top rope. The men shake hands again after the match to decent applause.
MATCH RESULT: Scott Savage wins by pinfall at 6:59

SECOND MATCH
Bobby Rude (With Duffman music) vs. Evil Eddy Watts
Rude comes out to make his North Sydney return. He`s dropped the "velvet panties" but he`s a still a heel, cutting a promo to remind us of who he is, and what makes him such a great RAW superstar (he actually has some support from some of the crowd who were no doubt happy to see a worker of his calibre back in the NSCF).
Rude now has Watts`s stick (insert joke here) and he tells him that he wants it, he has to come out and get it. The sounds of Bon Jovi bring Watts running to the ring and have Rude running for outside it.
At this point Rude reverts to heel stalling that would make Johnny Wiseguy proud. In particular, he amuses the audience by saying "It`s got cooties all over it!" after Watts chucked his headband at him.
After 5+ minutes of stalling (I timed it), the match finally REALLY starts. To be honest I was kind of disappointed. Once again, the two guys didn`t really get a chance to work a lengthy match (possibly because of the promo/stall before the match). However, they get credit for producing a finish that came out of nowhere- Watts seems to have the momentum before Rude hits the insigurri and wins.
(It should be noted that some of the crowd was amused with, and encouraged, Rude in his stalling- he even took the fans` advice as to call a "timeout".)
MATCH RESULT: Bobby Rude wins by pinfall at 10:25

THIRD MATCH
INTERGENDER MATCH: Johnny Wiseguy & Sweet Sara vs. Duke MacIssac/Rachel
Wiseguy hits the ring and talks a bit about New York. Duke cuts a promo of his own, and a challenge is made and accepted for a mixed tag match. The highlight of this exchange was Duke referring to his opponents at "Danny DeVito & Bunky Brewster"
The referee for this match is Sinder.
After shockingly less than 1 minute of stalling from Wiseguy, the match commences. Pretty standard fare from Duke/Wiseguy when they are in the ring. One neat spot is done on two occasions- Rachel hops on Duke`s back and slaps Wiseguy in the face.
The in-ring work of the women was rough as expected (I don`t know how much training either one of them has but I would assume that they are probably managers first, wrestlers second).
In another surprise finish, Duke gets the pinfall- not with the standard Kilt-A-Whirl, but with a legdrop instead. Shades of Hogan!
MATCH RESULT: Duke MacIssac/Rachel win by pinfall, MacIssac pins Wiseguy at 9:30

At this point of the show there was an intermission.

FOURTH MATCH
"Kowboy" Mike Hughes vs. Madman Williams
Prior to the match Hughes cuts a promo telling us about how Madman whined to the RAW offices wanting a rematch, and how he was set to kick his ass again.
James Ash is our referee for this contest.
The rematch from last time was another good encounter. The crowd kind of seemed flat, so that might have been why this match wasn`t as good as the last one. Still, some decent stuff here.
At 10:05 into the match "Wildman" Gary Williams makes the run-in to distract Hughes. Madman rolls up Hughes and scores the win in the rematch.
MATCH RESULT: Madman Williams by pinfall at 10:24

FIFTH MATCH (MAIN EVENT)
RAW TITLE & TAPED FIST MATCH: "Wildman" Gary Williams (challenger) vs. Chi Chi Cruz (champion)
Sinder is assigned to referee this championship match.
A humourous moment occurred at the start of this match as Williams tried to get the crowd into it. He tried to start a "Chi Chi sucks" chant, and after little success, he said, "Wildman sucks? Wildman sucks?" just trying to get the crowd to react. He hasn`t lost his wit!
This match, like the last one, wasn`t really anything we didn`t see before. The taped fist gimmick wasn`t really played up at all- in fact it was about 10 minutes into the match when I even realised that either guy had the tape on his hands.
After the faces had the upper hand in the last match, the tables turn at 7:54 when Bobby Rude makes the run-in to distract Williams. Cruz nails Wildman with a punch (don`t forget his fist is taped!) and scores the pinfall to retain the belt.
MATCH RESULT: Chi Chi Cruz by pinfall at 8:21. Cruz retains the RAW title.

I don`t really have much to say about this one. RAW, as always, seem to aim for consistency more than anything else. This show was pretty middle of the road, mostly average matches mixed in with some neat spots here and there. Bobby Rude`s return to the scene should help mix things up as long as he`s given the opportunity to work some solid matches.
