First of all, energetic was what I thought could describe Yuzu's latest mini album 'Yuzu Smile'.

'Ittsu a sumairu warudo' (It's a smile world) and 'Hohoemi' (the opening and closing tracks respectively) are more or less throwaway tracks, each about 30 secs long (short?). I thought they work fine as appetisers. The former is a gentle lullaby that informs the audience to whom this album is targeted at: kids. Well, maybe also adults who don't grow up (like yours truly)... ahem!... anyway, the story booklet that accompanies the CD is a one-sided affair (reminds me of the Giant Turnip story).

'Hohoemi' is yet another quiet tune with Yujin whistling away as he did in his site, though this track is accompanied by a simple keyboard instead of a guitar this time.

The two re-recorded songs 'Natsu Iro' and 'Mata aeru hi made' didn't sound too different from the previous ones. The new 'Natsu Iro' has a fuller musical arrangement, quicker, stronger guitar strummings and I thought I picked up some synthesizers somewhere in the bkgrd... (Did I mention that Natsu Iro is one of my fave music videos? :))

The new 'Mata aeru hi made' is more folk-rockish, feel-good; with an electric guitar thrown in for good effect, and the chorus with the kids come in right at the end. I thought it was much better than the original one. It's so... so... so much more Yuzu!

'Smile' reminds me of the opening score in Studio Ghibli's anime Totoro... it has a grand brass accompaniment with xylophones, trombones and other instruments that go boom boom boom. Plain cute and innocent, especially with the kids who go 'lalala' and yells a 'Smile!!!' at the end of the repetoire...

I enjoyed Sumairu Ondo. Very Japanese and very uh... japanese. Maybe it's the thump of the traditional drums and flute. It's infectious. It's a pleasant blend of harmonica and jap traditional instruments in which I'll never comprehend how they thought of it in the first place... one-legged dance stance with fans, anyone?

'Nichiyoubi no Gogo' (Sunday's afternoon) is happy and nothing else except Yuzu-ish. Something like what you might hear in Yuzu Ikka? :)

Well, that's about it for now, I might have just bored you with obvious biased opinions... The lyrics for 'Yuzu Smile' will be posted up as soon as I've settled some of the single couplings!
