*The horse trailer pulls in, the trailer which once pulled over 60 horses crammed into the top and bottom levels, to their fate at the slaughterhouse. Only one remained, only because the driver couldn't bear to see her die*
*The driver, a gruff old man with a huge heart, but knowing nothing about horses, yanked her out, tied her lead(made from baling twine) to the nearest object, a thin tree, gave her a tiny pat and drove away. The mare doesn't even look around. Her eyes, once so full of fire and life are dull and glazed over. You can count each rib and see her hip bones. Her pencil-thin neck onto which the small, but seemingly large head(b/c her neck is so thin) is held up with the thin rope, and that only. Her once-beautiful tail dusty and soaked with urine at the very bottom drags the ground. Her conformation- perfect. Her long forelock dangles in her eyes, and she doesn't bother to swat the many flies which are landing on her dull coat. In her head she wonders- "Why would anyone take me? They wouldn't. I will die like the others. I know it." She stands there, overgrown hooves infected with thrush planted in the thick grass. She doesn't even take a few bites of the lush greenery. To her, all hope is lost. Would anyone take an animal like her?
